MotorSkins - textile Startup of the month
This month, we introduce you to MotorSkins!
Startup Pitch:
MotorSkins produces shape-changing textiles with embedded fluidics for human-machine interaction and wearables.
Describe your technology/product.
We have a textile system that allows us to produce garments powered only by the user's own gait, without any batteries or motors. This allows us to produce simple, novel solutions for everyday life. Our first product is a hydrodynamic compression garment for the lower limbs. Intermittent compression has been shown to improve circulation, help with edema and recovery after exercise, and even help prevent deep vein thrombosis. Our upcoming products attach our wearable muscles to the user's joints to help people walk, either to support normal movement or for medical conditions..
What are you guys better at than others? What is your unique selling point?
Our hydrodynamic garment is dynamic and autonomous: it's more than just passive support, but it's free of electronics, which potentially makes it more sustainable. It is also familiar and comfortable, as it is textile-based and only supports or restricts movement when needed. Finally, it is adaptable as it can be visible or unobtrusive depending on your preference (low profile).
What market are you addressing?
We are at the intersection of sports, wellness and health and are looking to partner with companies in this space to bring our products to market. Our first market is Germany and the EU, for applications such as recovery after sports or for workers who stand for long periods of time, as a prevention for various types of diseases.
What kind of business model are you using?
B2B. Our focus is on hydrodynamic apparel that uses pressure changes to create movement. We work with sports and/or medical apparel brands and manufacturers who want to use our technology to increase their innovation and diversify their portfolio. However, we also offer development services to companies looking for innovative ideas for their products. We deal with proof-of-concept projects as well as higher technology challenges: We develop specific designs that meet the technical needs and specifications of each client and collaboration. Ideally, we can build a long-term business relationship between MotorSkins and future partners.
What stage of development are you currently in?
We have a functional MVP and intend to launch our product (hydrodynamic massage) with a partner. In this regard, we are progressing in two main aspects: first, in the development of a state-of-the-art knitted garment that enhances the effect of our hydrodynamic systems while maximizing comfort and wearability, and second, in a strategic partnership with a technical textile manufacturer to ensure the performance and durability of our embedded hydraulic circuits. We are also undertaking development projects for several companies looking to integrate textiles with embedded fluidics into new concepts for their portfolios, and are completing our first round of investments later this year.
Are there any other recent news you would like to share with readers?
This quarter (Q4 2021), we won the third place in Shenzhen Innovation Nanshan Global Entrepreneur Star Contest 2021. We were also featured in DesignWanted after appearing at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven. Earlier this year, we were named Startup of the Month by textil+mode, the German Textile and Fashion Industry Association.
