Solidification process of high temperature alloys

Researchers at IFW Dresden are investigating the influence of solidification conditions on the resulting microstructure. For this purpose, a constructed electromagnetic "levitation melting furnace" is available at the institute. The sample is in suspension during the entire process. As a result, nucleation of solid phases takes place at temperatures far below the melting point, allowing metastable phases to develop. The subsequent rapid solidification is recorded with a high-speed camera. This results in changes in the microstructures, which influence the properties of the materials. The direct insight into the phase formation can additionally be investigated externally by time-resolved X-ray diffraction. Especially for high temperature and reactive alloys, this approach proves to be a reliable method to investigate the solidification process of the melt without external influences.
